our core values
We seek to actively participate in living out what our founder, John Wesley, called the means of grace. These are ways in which God works invisibly in disciples to begin, strengthen, and confirm faith. Wesley preached that means of grace include worship, prayer, study of Scriptures, fasting, and other works of piety. Means of grace also include works of mercy and justice, such as visiting those who are sick and in prison, feeding and clothing people, opposing injustice, and giving all one can. Through the means of grace, our hearts and our lives are opened so that God may do good work in and through us.
Five faith practices help us to live out our core values: Worship, Grow, Serve, Give, and Share. These shape how we praise God and how we understand and live out our faith.
We believe that our passionate worship of God is an opportunity to praise and reflect on the abundant presence and grace of God in our lives, to be inspired by God’s Word, and ignited to live it out. Worship is primary--it is where we encounter God in Christ. Worship is participatory: it is an experience in cultivating our relationship with God and with each other as the people of God. In worship, God gathers us in, transforms lives, heals wounded souls, renews hope, shapes decisions, provokes change, inspires compassion, and binds us to one another. Through worship, God actively seeks a relationship with each of us, to pardon sins, restore relationships, and change lives.
We believe that faith is more of a journey than a destination. Whether you are unsure about God, feeling pulled to know more, have professed faith in Christ, or have been an active Christian for some time - we believe that all are called to grow intentionally in faith development. We believe that salvation is not a one-time event in our lives. We believe that it is an ongoing experience in God’s gracious presence that transforms us into the person God intends us to be. Through prayer, study of Scriptures, worship, and fellowship with others, we deepen our understanding of God’s love for us. We are committed to providing opportunities to grow deeper with Christ for all people.
We believe that our faith calls us to serve in ways that stretch us beyond our comfort zones. Through risk-taking mission and service, we engage with others by offering ourselves in ministry in ways we would not do if not for our desire and commitment to follow Christ. We believe that our lives, as well as the lives of those we are serving, are transformed through mission and service. Our capacity to love God and one another is fueled when we respond with works of compassion and justice.
We believe, as Wesley did, that we should “earn all we can, save all we can, give all we can.” God gives us grace abundantly, and thus we are called to give extravagantly, too. The ministries and opportunities available at Messiah come from the bountiful extension of gifts that others prayerfully give. Giving only increases our joy, therefore we encourage one another to give as Christ has given.
We believe that God has called us to share the contagious joy of following Jesus Christ with the world! We seek to share the love of Christ through radical hospitality so that all may experience the transforming grace of Jesus. We eagerly invite all to worship and know God. We seek to create a home where strangers become friends and all discover the abundance and joy Christ offers for all. We believe that in worship God is the host and Christ invites us all!
